2019 BDWA Shortlist

BEST EDITORIAL / OPINION WINE WRITING

“I was delighted by the number of writers who are using wine as a lens on culture, tackling issues of social justice, climate change, sustainability, sexism, humanism, historicity. The topic might be wine, but the story runs deeper.” Meg Maker, judge, Winner Best Editorial / Opinion Writing 2018.

BEST INTERVIEW – TEXT, VIDEO OR PODCAST

“I was surprised by the entries in the interview category, where the best examples really stretched the idea of who is appropriate to interview and what are the most interesting ways to conduct one. They ranged from short written Q & A’s to long, in-depth video and audio examples with people as diverse as Al Gore, Miami sommeliers, and a 15 year look back of a natural winemaker to a walk and talk in the vineyards with a winemaker in Champagne. Those that really worked focused on some further purpose, like exploring the idea of climate change or how the natural wine movement has changed.” Elin McCoy, Senior Judge

BEST VISUAL STORYTELLING – PHOTO, VIDEO OR IMAGE

“Every year I am amazed at the quality of the entrants. The talent of digital storytellers continues to improve for our industry and the BDWA brings them together to share the year’s best with the world”, Paul Mabray, judge

BEST WINE AND FOOD CONTENT – TEXT OR VIDEO

“The quality of online communication in our trade needs to improve and I’m confident that awards like these will help move us forward. I was once again really impressed by the submissions.  The shortlisted entries made me laugh, made me hungry, and desperate to taste the wines described.  In a few, I could also get lost watching beautifully-shot videos, and clicking through to well selected references.  I’m hoping for this year’s winners to be benchmarks for future submissions to admire and strive to surpass.” Greg Lambrecht, Creator, Coravin & judge

BEST TOURISM CONTENT WITH A FOCUS ON WINE – TEXT OR VIDEO

“As a first-time judge at BDWA I was amazed by the colour and diversity of the entries. During these troubled times this is exactly what we need in the world of wine: passionate content that grabs us from our chair and takes us on a journey”, Ilkka Sirèn, judge, Winner Best Tourism with a Wine Content 2018.
